Firms Maintain Flex; Lawmakers Eye Expansion

While many companies are conducting layoffs and eliminating bonuses and salary increases to survive the recession, this article notes that most are keeping the flex programs that allow employees to set their own schedules. A recent 400 employer survey by New York’s Families and Work Institute found that more than 80 percent have kept their flexible work programs – telecommuting, compressed workweeks, and voluntary reduced hours – and an additional 13 percent have actually increased them. These findings are affirmed by a recent study by WorldatWork and the Work Design Collaborative that found that 45 percent of respondents [three times as many as expected] reported they now include nonexempt employees in their flex work arrangements.
