ABCs Of Green Acoustics
Green buildings are getting a lot of attention these days for their environmental and health impacts and long-term cost savings. For all this attention, notes the author, many of these buildings fall short of expectations in their acoustical performance. Part of the problem seems to be that LEED and other rating systems don’t include specific acoustical credits, and designers are simply too caught up in more top of mind considerations to even think about this issue. The good news is that open-plan green workspaces can get the proper acoustics as easy as ABC…
Absorb: In open plan work environments the biggest source of sound reflection is the ceiling. This article provides several green approaches to softening ceiling spaces, including materials that mimic drywall while providing good sound absorption.
Block: A solid barrier between building occupants is vital to good acoustical performance in open-plan spaces. Most companies fill their spaces with open, airy products [desks and other office furniture] that promote collaboration but strip away any semblance of privacy. The author recommends 5-6 foot high fabric covered panels topped with glass or acrylic to extend the partition for a more transparent effect.
Cover Up: Achieving superior acoustical performance requires what one expert calls the “acoustic perfume” of a sound-making [white noise] system. The results are a comfortable level of background noise that gently distorts nearby conversations, imparting a degree of privacy.
The article provides readers with a website address where green acoustics guru Jeffrey Fullerton talks about his seven favorite new acoustical products, including a renewable ceiling tile and various spray-on cellulose acoustical finishes.
